Abstract
It is generally accepted that the goals of the Semantic Web project are ambitious.
One of the key goals of this project is to enable computers to solve everyday problems.
This will require applications to better understand metadata and to be able to make
intelligent inferences based upon that data. It will also require a new generation
of metadata tools designed to promote that understanding.
The Dublin Core metadata registry is one of a growing number of applications
being deployed to serve this purpose. Its machine (application) interfaces are
designed to provide other applications with information that facilitates
their understanding of metadata.
This presentation will introduce the application interfaces provided by the Dublin Core Metadata Registry.
The underlying (Web-services) architecture will be reviewed and differences between the interfaces will be identified.
A number of use-case examples will be provided.
Additionally, the inter-registry communication module,
which is built on the Registry's SOAP interface, will be presented.
Finally, the usage statistics for the interfaces will be reviewed in order to provide an
understanding of how they are currently being used.
