• Used as word for:

• parsing rules for character sequences

• (“valid code, equivalent code”)

• fixed meaning (decode) of valid character sequences.

• Example: ISO dates: YYYY-MM-DD

• Once one “knows” 2003-03-10 represents an ISO date, then one knows the meaning.
