  • Chemistry: Babel, ChemDraw
  • Molecular biology: SRS
  • Bibliography management: EndNotes, bp

• Disadvantage: adding new format impossible or very difficult

• “Roll your own” wrappers: awk, perl

• Difficult to maintain
