The application areas classes are a RDF class-scheme, intended for use in, but not limited to, schemes for the Math&Industry project (http://www.mathematik-21.de/). The dc:subject contains additional and explanaitonal terms, whereas the dcq:alternative contains only long versions of terms used in the rdfs:label as shortcuts. So for query issues you should use the content of dc:subject and dcq:alternative, but for displaying additional information about the rdfs:label show only dc:subject.
